murder is still unsolved.
In February of 2014, the FBI reopening its investigation into Emmett Till’s case after new evidence surfaced linking two men to the crime. For more than fifty years now, the Till family has been seeking justice for the murder of their son, Emmett Till. Till was brutally tortured and murdered in 1955 at the age of fourteen in Mississippi, after he had allegedly whistled at a white woman.
Till's sister, Mamie, fought tirelessly to bring the killers to justice, and she remains dedicated to this cause today. It was not until 2004 that Bryant and Milam were finally arrested and charged with Till's murder. Mamie and her husband, Roy Bryant, were key witnesses in the case, and their testimonies helped to bring about their convictions. In spite of their victories, Mamie and Roy Bryant continue to struggle with the trauma of their brother's death.
Till's legacy, in their opinion, has been tarnished by the way in which his case has been handled. The Till family's quest for justice has had a far-reaching impact on American history. Incidents such as Till's murder have been used as justification for acts of racial justice and hate crimes, and Mamie and Roy Bryant have helped to ensure that their brother's legacy will never be forgotten.
